UCC takes a holistic approach to alleviating the chronic unemployment in Newark, NJ by providing program participants with expert guidance on how to write a compelling resume and cover letter, conduct effective research into organizations that are currently hiring, perfect the interview process, and obtain meaningful employment to help combat the persistence of unemployment on the path to independence.

Community Parenting Support Group

The UCC Community Parenting Support Group meets twice a month on Wednesday evenings to provide a communal and supportive space for parents to share struggles on parenting, and to offer wisdom gained from their own experiences with others.

Each meeting includes a brief free-write, a window for sharing/writing thoughts on current issues they are working on with their children, the introduction and discussion of a therapeutic writing exercise to give parents more tools for self-expression so as to empower them to approach issues with their children with more calm and clarity.

Creative Narratives

Creative narratives guide youth in grades four through eight in writing activities which cover improvisation, dynamic writing, fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.  The program's goal is to increase the participants' exposure to and interest in, literature and the arts, as well as encourage self-expression and creative writing abilities.

Learning Target Games

Learning Target Games instruct elementary school students in the creation of their own board games based on the Common Core standards.  The Purpose of Learning Target Games is to help close the achievement gap.  We believe if our youth are held accountable for their own learning in order to create their own authentic board game, then the responsibility will carry over into their academics in the classroom and thus narrowing the achievement gap for so many of our youth at risk for academic underachievement.  These board games are then used in our after-school program and during family game nights that are sponsored events conducted by UCC.
